MMA,Jui Jitsu,Muay Thai Kick Boxing, Wrestling?
I think that learning MMA and knowing it is so cool and i want to learn it the problem is that if you'd train at a gym, you'd probably have to participate and all the tournaments and im scared to fight. My parents say i should start off at Riesling and work my way up to Mix Martial Arts. But i need to bulk up first, any ideas????

Is strength training the same as core training? can anyone send me links of a good free website with routines?
No, core training is when you target the muscles around your abdomen and lower back (your “core”). Strength training is when you use weights to train any muscle group.

Ghrelin and entrainment

“New” research on ghrelin
Apparently, scientists have now discovered ghrelin’s role in meal initiation and it’s entrainment to habitual meal patterns. Funny, because I’ve been talking about this since I started the blog. Judging from the quick look through my collection of ghrelin related research papers, it seems the earliest paper mentioning this effect of ghrelin in humans is from 2001. The entrainment of ghrelin is part of what makes the 16 hour fast so easy after a few days adaptation.
Though it’s not mentioned in the link, ghrelin has other interesting effects as well, such as stimulating brain functions of spatial learning and memory development. From an evolutionary perspective this makes sense; the urge to find food may create more competitive skills to ensure survival.
In a similar vein, the metabolic increase (via incrased norepinephrine/epinephrine) that occurs during short term fasting is a function of the body telling you to […]

Researchers have found that a (virtually unknown to the public) form of cholesterol called oxycholesterol may be your most serious cardiovascular health threat.
“Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and the heart-healthy high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) are still important health issues,” says study leader Zhen-Yu Chen, Ph.D., of Chinese University of Hong Kong. “But the public should recognize that oxycholesterol is also important and cannot be ignored.
Our work demonstrated that oxycholesterol boosts total cholesterol levels and promotes atherosclerosis [“hardening of the arteries”] more than non-oxidized cholesterol.”

Q.     So, how do we get this oxidized cholesterol – oxycholesterol?
A.     Fried food, processed food, junk food…basically all of the food that makes you fat also has high levels of oxycholesterol. Quel surprise.
Scientists have known for years that a reaction between fats and oxygen, a process termed oxidation, produces oxycholesterol in the body.

Oxidation occurs, for instance, when fat-containing foods are heated, as in frying chicken or […]

The Philosophy of Fitness

The more challenging or threatening the situation or context to be assimilated and affirmed, the greater the stature of the person who can achieve it. The demon that you can swallow gives you its power, and the greater life’s pain, the greater life’s reply.” ~ Joseph Campbell from The Power of Myth (Canada)

Getting in shape is hard work.
Getting out of shape is much, much easier.

Getting fit requires self-discipline.
Getting fit requires the ability to say no.
Getting fit requires sacrifice.

But, it’s worth it.

The demon that you can swallow gives you its power
.
Thanks to TC @ TMuscle for putting me onto this quote.

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we’ll use sprints as an example here. Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds Walk for 10 seconds Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets. So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time. Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I’ll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work. Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. […]
