Pushups in the ocean at 6am

So this sleep lover decided to wake up early last Thursday to see what the buzz surrounding Matt’s beach bootcamp was all about. Quite honestly, I hadn’t been awake at 5am in a while, but what I saw that morning blew me away.
It’s 5:34am and the gym’s parking lot is full. Inside, a concentrated morning silence coming from the group of 20+ bootcamp trainees that stretch in preparation to the training.
At 5:45, Matt starts the warm up with 80 sit-ups in under 2 minutes – that sets the tone to the rest of the training. Matt is decided to get the best out of each and every student, no matter what their fitness level might be.
After the warm up, students grab their backpacks, take a military-like formation and head to the kitty hawk beach running. From here on now, they will cover a total of […]

Brad,
I’m following your recommend information on how much protein to build muscle along with an “intense” enough work out program. It is working well for me, but a couple questions loom in my mind. I’ve read in articles on the internet that a person cannot “absorb” more than 30 grams of protein in one meal. Is this true? If it is true, does this mean if I ate the recommended daily intake of protein to build muscle in one meal, I wouldn’t be meeting your recommended requirement? I don’t consume that much protein in one meal, but I am curious to know if I eat a meal with 40g does the 10 grams go to “waste”?
Thanks, Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
There is strong scientific evidence showing that you are able to adapt to the amount of protein you ingest. Meaning, as you eat more (or less) protein your digestive system learns to ‘digest […]

Just a quick note today.
I’m currently reading “The Tao of Physics” by Fritjof Capra and thought I share a very interesting visual with you.
To understand the size of an atom consider the following:
If you were to take an orange, and blow it up to the size of the Earth, it’s atoms would be the size of cherries.
To me, this is truly amazing visual that really puts the microcosmic world into perspective.

PS- From physics to philophy, the power of a void or of ‘nothing’ is remarkable. Tying in to nutrition, remember – The best way to accomplish something by doing nothing is by fasting. Simply take a break from eating and burn body fat. Simple.

Banana Buckwheat Muffins

I was asked by one of my subscribers if I could come up with a recipe for buckwheat. I’m not exactly renowned as a baker generally, although I did make all the breads in a catering company I worked for a few years back, so I have the basic knowledge of what to do. Shouldn’t be too hard to incorporate buckwheat into baking, right? Since we’re also featuring Allspice on Spice week and had requests for Nutmeg, this recipe covers all bases.
Here Stateside, buckwheat is primarily sold as processed flour or in pancake mixes. The Japanese use buckwheat flour to make Soba noodles as well as other products. In Europe, buckwheat groats (de-hulled seeds) called Kasha are cooked as a rice substitute. The groats are sometimes used in the U.S. as a breakfast cereal in place of oatmeal or porridge.Buckwheat is a suitable substitute for grains for people who are […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we’ll use sprints as an example here. Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds Walk for 10 seconds Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets. So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time. Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I’ll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work. Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. […]

It has been shown that being obese can increase risk of an early death by 2 to 3 times, but what about being just a little overweight? In my day to day life I see many examples of people who are just a little overweight. In fact, I would guess that at least 1/3 of the people I know who are over the age of 50 fit into this category. I have found a few studies that show that being overweight increases the risk for several life threatening diseases.

[I love seeing older people who are full of energy and goofing around, like this couple. Honestly, there is no reason to grow up and act like an elderly person is "suppose to". I say no to all of that! I am aiming for 40-50 more years of fun and excitement.]
