See Some Warriors Sweatin’ It Uuupp!

  • Michele -Dirty Dash 2014

I used to be shocked at the number of people I saw in the gym who put so much time into cardio workouts without seeing any results. Many of these people are putting forth much more effort than me, but don't have the results to show for it. I feel bad, because I know their challenge comes down to diet. Did you know that the type of cardio you do, can play a big role in your craving for food? It is possible that many people are sabotaging their ability to lose body fat, by choosing a type of cardio that makes them desperately crave food.

[Have you ever been so hungry that you ate everything in sight? I have had problems with hunger in the past, but adjusting my cardio has helped a ton in this regards. The wrong type of cardio can make dieting a tough deal!]

NOTE: This is a Guest Post by John Barban, Science Editor of Eat Stop Eat and the Nutrition Help Blog.
As you know Brad does a wonderful job simplifying the concept of diet and weight loss to a point that is straight forward, easy to understand and frankly very difficult to argue with. But I have a bone to pick with Brad.
I feel like he stops short and doesn’t quite take it as far as it can go.
I think there is one more step Brad could take explaining how weight loss and diet really work. And so far this is most effective and simple way I can explain this (although it does seem to make some people uncomfortable)…so here goes.
Take 5 minutes at some point today (preferably alone) to take all of your clothes off and go stand in front of a full body mirror and then say this one simple […]

I can't believe I've been blogging for close to two years now! Back on June 8, 2007 I made the first post on this site and was just hoping that someone would eventually find it. I waited 4 days and got my first comment and immediately responded back. This was exciting, because the goal was to create a community of people sharing fitness ideas. I didn't want this to be about me giving lessons. I can't thank everyone enough for making this a positive and entertaining environment to talk about fitness.

[The amount of sites online is staggering. It almost seems like there is too much competition to ever become successful. If you are considering starting a site, don't think like this. We are in desperate need for helpful sites written by people who want to make a difference.]

May 20th: Added new pic of Mikael R. Added three testimonials; Craig, Michael and Dave.
May 28th: Added a client – Andreas S. Added a testimonial – Joseph. Alright, these will be the last of the additions to this post before the next client update. I will hopefully have time for a blogpost next week, so check in for that.
See all client updates and testimonials on this site by clicking here and here.

Andreaz placed 2nd in the -70 kg weight class at Sweden Grand Prix. I used an unconventional contest prep, keeping water and sodium high until the very end. He came in great, but didn’t have to suffer through the catatonic state and malaise of a conventional contest prep.

I can't thank Brad Pilon enough for taking time out of his busy schedule to do a guest post for my site. Any of you who are fans of "Eat Stop Eat" or have been following Brad on Twitter know that his wife just gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Ro Wilder Pilon (cool name). I asked Brad to do a guest post on calorie deficit and I think his son was born the following day! This is an outstanding article, well worth your time, and will challenge much of what you have heard when it comes to dieting and weight loss. Love it!

[Brad Pilon's ideas challenge much of the mainstream fitness info you see published in magazines, books, and online. Slowly, but surely, his ideas are going to go mainstream. Right now, anyone who studies his materials will be WAY "ahead of the curve".]

I don't have anything against personal training or personal trainers. Having said that, I think ultimately you are the one who will eventually find your own ideal routine. Even the goal of my site is to give out guidelines and "tweaks", so that you can find the routine that works best for you. I am always hesitant to give out exact routines, because copying something that works for me 100% isn't something that will be best for any other person.

[Overdue for a good black and white picture. This one reminds me of "The Haunting", a 1963 black and white horror film where an evil mansion traps all of its guests. For some reason, I find old black and white horror movies scarier than modern day films.]

I wanted to make a post outlining the most common strength training mistakes I see in the gym on a regular basis. I know that all of us reach sticking points in strength gains, but you could be doing a few things in your workout that are sabotaging your own progress. In my rush to getting stronger in my early days of lifting, I made these same mistakes. Use this post as a checklist next time you get stuck. Strength training is safe and easy when done properly, but can make you weak and sore if done wrong.

[I was overdue for an odd photo, so this should do the job. As usual, only about 1/2 of the photos on my site have anything to do with the article. This weekend I am going with a few friends to a beach house that has a nice hot tub overlooking the […]

Low carb again

Given that my post Low Carb Talibans caused such a stir, I thought it would be appropriate to link Lyle’s latest article about low carb diets and the “metabolic advantage” Enjoy, folks.
If you consider buying any of Lyle’s books, which you should, make sure you read my reviews.

Interviewed by Adam Steer

Here’s an interview I did with Adam Steer from Better is Better. Includes a book excerpt.

Excerpt from Knowledge and Nonsense

There are only a handful of big names in the Intermittent Fasting game. As many of you will know, I’m a big fan of Brad Pilon and his Eat Stop Eat approach. But another name that continues to attract my attention is Martin Berkhan of Leangains. His approach is quite different to that of Brad, so I contacted him to see about getting an interview with him. To my great pleasure he agreed.
As you’ll see, Martin’s focus, like Brad’s, is mainly on physique. However, the evidence supporting the health benefits of Intermittent Fasting just keeps piling up and I think that no matter what approach you take you’ll reap the rewards of vitality and wellness.
Enjoy!

Low Carb Talibans

I subscribe to the idea, that the best diet is the one you can maintain in the long run. For me personally, this entails intermittent fasting and a cyclic approach of higher/lower carbs, plenty of protein and low/moderate fat. My main focus lies on high quality foods, with nutritious and satiating properties, and not discrimination towards a particular macronutrient.
I don’t believe there is any magic to be had when one is excluding fat or carbs from their diet. Both have their place. However, there are people that subscribe to a completely different set of opinions.
After watching the documentary Religulous(melding of “religion” and “ridiculous) yesterday, it dawned upon me how much some religious fundamentalists have in common with certain nutritional fundamentalists. In recent years, I have seen the rise of one group in particular. I prefer to call them the low carb talibans.
When I am using the term ‘fundamentalist’ here, I […]
