Measuring your body weight sucks…It really, really does. It’s a poor metric of what is going on inside your body, and use of it as a metric leads to many of our diet myths and fallacies.Have you ever heard people say that they massively increased their calories and their weight didn’t budge?I did that.During my 7 weeks off from weight training, fasting and dieting, my weight barely changed, going from 176 to 174. Heck, when you look at those numbers alone you may even say I’m lucky – blessed with the genetics to eat whatever I want and still lose weight.

These days it seems that everyone who wants to lose weight is using intermittent fasting. Yet is this an effective method and if so what are its benefits? What is intermittent fasting?Intermittent fasting is often referred to as the Fast Diet or 5:2 Diet, it involves fasting for 2 days of the week where your calorie intake will not be allowed to exceed 500 calories if you are female and 600 calories if you are male. For the remaining 5 days you are allowed to eat a normal diet. These fast days will create a calorie-deficit that will ultimately result in pounds being lost.SEE ALSO: 3 Steps for Losing Weight without Losing yourself Image Credit: ZenAngie This is not the only benefit of intermittent fasting however as there are also claims that it can help to increase your life span, improve your cognitive function and provide more protection against diseases such as Alzheimer’s.Is intermittent fasting proven?Even though the evidence supporting its claims is growing steadily as with any diet there are going to be doubts about its claims, especially when compared to the efficiency of other calorie controlled diets. There have been positive studies performed such as the 8 week trial performed on a group of 30 obese women to show the effects of intermittent fasting. The study which was published in the 2012 edition of Nutrition & Metabolism involved the women consuming low calories liquid meals for 6 days of the week, with the remaining day being a fast day. After the study had concluded the women had lost an average of 8.8lbs with 6cm being lost from their waistlines.Issues with intermittent fasting? As with the positive evidence there is even less research on the possible side effects of intermittent fasting, although there have been reports of insomnia, bad breath (which is a common side effect of low carbohydrate diets), irritability, anxiety and dehydration. One of the major concerns about this diet is the persons own ability to moderate their food consumption on the ‘feast’ days.Despite stating that you should be eating a normal diet people often believe that the fast day will allow them to eat whatever they want on the other 5 days without suffering any consequences. Unfortunately if you want to lose weight you will still need to stick to a moderately healthy diet for these 5 days.

Cutting Out Gluten Cuts Out Kids’ Asthma 5 Comments Monday, July 22nd, 2013 Written by: Elize van der MerweEver since my oldest son was a toddler (around 2yrs), he would grow short of breath fast. He was a very heavy boy, strong and muscular, but not fat, and definitely not overweight. Come winter time he would be almost continuously on bronchio-dilators, double dose, as single dose didn’t clear his chest. Come summer, all symptoms would clear and only the occasional closed chest and wheezing would bother him.Adam was 4 years old and in that winter had his worst attack ever

In Memoriam: Mary Sydna Wolf 64 Comments Saturday, July 20th, 2013 My mom died last night at 8:30 after many ups and downs over the past few months when her health really took a turn. The reality of it all is slowly percolating through me…but we had ample time to say good-bye’s and be at peace with things. I never really got to say goodbye to my Dad so I’m grateful for that at least, although the past few months were really hard on my mom.Mom was born in Appleton Arkansas, June 18th 1941, right at the tail end of the dust-bowl and Great Depression. She was one of three kids.

Calorie Secrets ads help keep the site free. Learn moreHigh Intensity Interval Training, otherwise known as HIIT, is a workout craze becoming more and more popular due to its promise to deliver health benefits and weight loss similar or better to those achieved with steady state exercise, but in a much shorter time frame. What is HIIT?HIIT workouts are comprised of short bursts of very high intensity sprints for a time frame ranging from 10 seconds to up to several minutes with a recovery period of one to five minutes at a low intensity or in a resting state. This is repeated over a certain time frame, which could range from as little as four minutes to up to twenty in trained individuals.  This type of workout is claimed to burn as many calories, increase aerobic fitness and give other health benefits similar to or even better than those achieved when doing exercise at a slower pace for a longer time frame. What does the evidence say?Although it a fairly new concept in the workout scene, research into the benefits of HIIT has been underway for much longer than this and many studies have been done investigating the effects of such an exercise regime.  HIIT has been associated with cardiovascular and metabolic benefit in both at risk and healthy people and has been found to have a higher compliance level than more typical exercise regimes.Regular HIIT has also been associated with increased levels of both aerobic and anaerobic fitness and recent research suggests that it may be more effective than other forms of exercise in reducing subcutaneous and abdominal fat, although the mechanism for this is not clear yet.Insulin resistance and improved glucose tolerance have also been associated with a HIIT regime, which may reduce risk of type 2 diabetes. What are the advantages gained from HIIT?The research suggests that HIIT results in health benefits at least as good as steady state exercise, if not better and it can be done in a much shorter time frame.  For those who live busy lifestyles and have little time to work out, HIIT is an excellent option to get the benefits of exercise in short time. For those who have hit a weight loss plateau, starting a HIIT regime may help to kick start weight loss again. What are the disadvantages?Although HITT may seem largely advantageous, there are some drawbacks to this type of exercise program.  For obese patients and those who are at high risk of heart disease, such an intense form of activity may not be advisable and certainly should not be carried out without medical supervision.Likewise for those who are not used to exercise and have a very low level of fitness, this type of program may not be suitable, at least in the first instance. It should also be noted that to get the benefits from HIIT, it needs to be done properly.  You really need to be working hard during the sprint sessions, ideally at a high heart rate and this type of training is best suited to being done under the instruction of a trainer, especially for those who have limited exercise experience. It should also be noted that this method of training is intensive and may not have the stress relief benefits or social factors that other more relaxed forms of exercise have. Many of the studies resulting in good levels of fat loss using HIIT have used a very intensive program involving 30 second sprints but more research needs to be done into optimizing the regime for the general public. Is HIIT the best way to lose fat?Whilst some past research comparing HIIT with steady state exercise has shown little difference in fat loss between the two groups, it should be noted that the time needed to achieve the same fat loss in the HIIT group was half that required from the steady state group. Thus it seems that for the time needed, HIIT is indeed a more efficient way to burn fat.More recent studies have shown that HIIT training decreases levels of abdominal and subcutaneous fat significantly when compared to steady state exercise, although it is unclear why this is the case.  IIt is possible that skeletal muscle changes may result in more oxidation or burning of fat than improved glucose tolerance may contribute.  Some animal studies have also shown that HIIT may act to suppress the appetite, which may be another mechanism that results in less intake of food and therefore loss of fat.Studies have shown a lot of variation in fat loss with HIIT, and it should be remembered that other factors such as diet and every day activity levels may also contribute to fat loss and need to be considered in conjunction to any weight loss exercise regime.References used in this articleLike this article? What 74 Years Old Should Feel Like 6 Comments Monday, July 15th, 2013 Written by: JaneI was introduced to the Paleo diet by a friend of mine, the lady who owns the campground where I work each summer. She was so excited about the difference it had made for her. She has always been extremely active and very health conscious, running, bicycling, and moving all the time. This way of eating made her feel even better. I have always been active but was certainly beginning to slow down and not having the energy I wanted.

I Had No Idea That A Transformation Of This Kind Was Even Possible (Update From Robert) 6 Comments Monday, July 8th, 2013 Here’s an update from our friend Robert, featured in a previous testimonial here: http://robbwolf.com/2012/12/10/8-months-paleo-lost-70-pounds-people-recognize-me/Written by: RobertI started the Paleo program after being encouraged by my son, reading Robb’s book, listening to some pod casts and listening to several of Gary Taubes lectures on You Tube.  I began about the second week in May, 2012 and was 278lbs at that time.  It is now the end of the first week in July 2013 (so a year and two months later) and this morning my weight was 189lbs.  My ultimate goal is still four pounds away and I am still seeing my weight decrease.  But I don’t think my appearance will change significantly so here are the comparison pictures.  The 1st three are before the diet and the second four are within the last couple of weeks (last two this morning ).Before pics:After Pics:Our exercise routine never really changed.  We are both over 60.   We still try to walk 6 miles each morning at 4mph and do whatever manual labor is required to keep up two houses, lawns and woodpiles.  We have remained as Paleo as possible given the necessity to occasionally eat at someone’s home.  I would estimate that in general we are about 95% Paleo and when we are home, near 100%.  We have no symptoms or arthritis at all any more and intend to continue this type of diet as long as we can cook for ourselves.  We also have been herbalists for some time and often scavenge edible plants when we walk.  They have enabled us to try more truly (non-store bought) fruits and veggies and varied our diet.About a year and a half ago, I was driving somewhere and counting my blessings.  The only thing I could think of that might be a welcome improvement in life was to lose a few pounds.  I had no idea that a transformation of this kind was even possible.  Thanks for all you folks have done with your web site and pod casts to help me!  I now take no medication at all for anything.  I was on blood pressure meds for over 30 years but have been taken entirely off them by my doctor and have not felt this able and healthy since I was about 30.Good luck and best wishes,RobAbout Christopher Christopher Williams (a.k.a. The main reason that most people start a new diet, exercise program or keep fit routine, is to lose weight. Ask any one of them which is the perfect way to drop pounds and the usual answer will be, “as quickly as possible.” This is why high intensity interval training, or HIIT, has become so popular recently. Its devotees claim that it gets you lean and trim in less time. This program might not be for everyone and it is worth taking time to examine it more closely before you commit to HIIT.HIIT is a way of training that uses short intervals of exercise at maximum intensity, interspaced with longer intervals of exercise at a more moderate intensity. The idea is that because you keep pushing yourself beyond your normal aerobic limits you increase the amount of calories burnt during and after the session as it takes longer for your body to recover.
