High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T) comes in a wide variety of forms with every trainer implementing their own ideas on the technique, but the key idea behind this training session remains the same. It involves short sharp high intensity workout periods followed by lower intensity breaks long enough that your body recovers and can perform at high intensities again. Although it is only now becoming a mainstream way of training the H.I.I.T principles have been around for years and implemented by top athletes all over the world. So why now is only just becoming popular? Trainers for years have followed the same idea of long sessions working at a low intensity keeping the heart rate within the ‘Fat Burning Zone’ and although with the correct diet and discipline this can be a very effective method, the long sessions have become unpopular because clients just don’t have enough time.

We all live busy lives and there are a lot of people who claim that they simply dont have time to go to the gym for a long cardio workout or strength training routine. The good news is you don’t need to spend hours on the treadmill or elliptical to burn some serious fat. All you need is four minutes. The type of training I am referring to is a different form of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) called Tabata.

High Intensity Interval Training, or (HIIT) for short, has become all the rage for people looking to spice up their dull cardio routines and get leaner than they have ever been before.HIIT is a training protocol that involves periods of maximum effort followed by active rest. For example, you could sprint as fast as you can for 60 seconds, followed by walking for 60 seconds, then repeat. Such a workout could be completed in 30 minutes or less.Advocates of HIIT, such as the good people at Simply Shredded, argue that HIIT, as opposed to steady state cardio, is a better way to burn calories and reduce body fat. They highlight some of the research that has led them to this conclusion: “One of the earliest studies, done by researchers at Laval University (Ste-Foy, Quebec, Canada), kept it basic, using two groups in a months-long experiment.

Before I get into the specific types of workouts that qualify as MRT, let me tell you a little bit about why these workouts are so effective. For quite a long time now, health and fitness researchers have been preaching that strength training is an important component in a weight loss program. But over the past several years, with the advent of commercial programs like P90X, Insanity, CrossFit and others, strength training has evolved from something involving long hours of slow sets in the gym to something approaching what I would call balistic movement with resistance. And the truth is, both forms of strength training can be effective for weight loss (as well as for building muscle and gaining strength, obviously), but there is a problem with both of these types of workouts – they are not safe for the majority of the population, and not even for those who are quite fit.An old-school weight workout, which the fitness world has lately given the shiny new moniker “High-Intensity Resistance Training (HIRT)”, involves lifting very heavy weights for a few (6 or so) repetitions, resting for two or three minutes, then doing it again three or four more times before moving on to the next exercise. This type of training creates major metabolic changes in the body (especially the muscles and the systems servicing those muscles), but it is A) very time-consuming and B) very hard on the joints of anyone over the age of 30, regardless of how fit or strong they are

Interval training has proven to be one of the most effective ways to kick fat-burning into high gear, boost metabolism, and improve overall fitness. Yeah, sign us up for that. The only kicker? Interval training gets those great results by pushing the body with high intensity exercises, broken up with lower-intensity efforts in between. Nailing the timing and techniques can take plenty of practice, but that’s where Greatist comes in
