Wednesday, January 29, 2014 I’m taking a pass on this one. My elliptical is unavailable right now, and that’s the only cardio that I do that I can really go “all out” on. I’m still coughing from a bad cold 2 months ago, and physically I’m just not ready for that kind of workout.

It’s Nike Training Club Week. Nike hold free NTC (Nike Training Club) classes across the UK a number of times a week, including Train to Run, Yoga, Run Clubs and the classic NTC full body workout class. This past week, they’ve been hosting daily free workouts, talks and workshops across London. They’re hosting them in other cities across the World during the rest of January (America is next week). The class on Wednesday was held at Equinox (aka the most incredible gym in London) and included a long warm up, followed by this Tabata workout

Also check out our Client Jan Newsletter We have been using the Tabata system of training in our studio for several years now both in our Met-X-Fitness and in our more Blitz / Boot Camp orientated Pilates Mat and Reformer Class’s and because I know all about the excellent benefits and results of this style of training I rather stupidly assumed everyone else did too. I realized last week that this was not the case when on two separate occasions I was asked by a client and a trainer I was chatting with – the same two questions what exactly is Tabata? And how does it work? So here it is – Tabata, a high intensity, short duration effective exercise systemTabata – What is it?Tabata (developed by it’s name sake Japanese Professor Izumi Tabata) is a high intensity interval training system (HIIT) that since its inception has provided remarkable results – he originally developed this system for the Japanese speed skating team in 1996 Tabata – How does it work?

Tabata Training is a High Intensity Interval Training Workout that lasts four minutes and consists of several different exercises, 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off (rest periods after each exercise.) There are many forms of full workouts, exercises to incorporate, and each workout can be designed to give you a different result, depending on what goals you are working towards. Tabata Training is great for calorie burning, muscle endurance, agility & speed progress, and lean muscle development. Technically, you should stick with the four minute workout in these specific 20 second on, 10 second off “zones,” however, if you are a first-time “Tabata-er,” or a deconditioned individual, you may choose to change this based on your current fitness level.Tabata training was born after Japanese scientist Izumi Tabata and his colleagues compared the results of moderate intensity training and HIIT. The study evaluated two groups of speed-skating athletes. The first group trained on ergonomic cycles at moderate intensity for one hour, five days per week, for a total of six weeks.

Review: Breathless Body 3: HIIT It Big I got several new workout DVD’s for the holidays, bought a few and since last week was focused on re-building strength, this week we put a few of the new ones in the mix. The first new one I’m not going to review yet because it would get me in trouble. The venom I spewed while doing that workout because we didn’t know you could turn off the instructional mode was epic. We will do it again as a full workout as it was intended and when Aunt Flo vacates because honestly, I think I should not do new workouts when she visits. It skews my reality. But last night’s was good enough that I feel okay in reviewing it.Breathless Body 3: HIIT IT BIG is one of the ones I bought
