I’ve recently been introduced to a new type of workout, called Tabata Training. If you’re not familiar with Tabata, it’s a basic workout form of high intensity interval training with enormous benefits. The idea behind Tabata is to workout as hard as you can for only 4 minutes and it will have the same benefits as 30 minutes or more of cardio.Photo Credit: www.tabatatraining.orgTabata was founded by a Japanese scientist named Izumi Tabata, who conducted a study comparing moderate intensity training with high intensity training. The athletes who trained with moderate intensity workouts for 5 days a week for 6 weeks showed an increase in their cardiovascular system, but little results in their anaerobic system.

How Increasing a Tabata Repertoire Will Increase Fat Loss and Calorie BurnTabata is a unique form of cardiovascular exercise that delivers more healthy benefits than virtually all traditional physical exercises. Oh cardio, we love to hate you. You take forever; we run on a treadmill going nowhere. (Are we done yet?) If this sounds familiar, consider Tabata training — a super high-intensity workout that not only improves aerobic capacity in about four minutes per session, but also has tons of other benefits. Developed by Dr. Izumi Tabata, lead coach of Japan’s speed skating team, the Tabata method increases your anaerobic threshold with short bursts of hard, fast training via compound movements (which work several muscle groups at once)

Some increase strength, some increase muscle mass while others help you lose weight. With Jerry Sands’ demotion earlier this week, it became pretty clear that Jose Tabata will start 2013 out in Pittsburgh, most likely as Travis Snider’s primary backup/platoon partner in right field. Tabata’s only 24, but this is almost certainly his last chance to play regularly for for the Pirates. If he can’t hack it in the early part of this season, Sands will be at Triple-A waiting to relieve him and Tabata will probably be ignominiously non-tendered or appended as an inconsequential throw-in in a trade to some other poor Neal-Huntington-in-2008-type sap, loading up on ex-blue chip prospects to try and accelerate his club’s rebuilding process. Tabata is on fire this spring, with four doubles and a home run in 26 at-bats. People are raving about his conditioning

This is a bodyweight only Tabata Training for figure competition so it can be easily done at home or outdoors! This workout is 45 minutes long but feel free to cut in in half if you want to use it as your HIIT cardio for after your weight training workout! You many also need to condition yourself if you are not used to this type of training so it may take you a bit longer. I hate doing boring cardio and reserve the elliptical for days I really don’t have much energy. When I feel like a beast, I train like a beast

Ultimately, the debate among Pirates fans about whether Travis Snider or Jose Tabata should start in right field probably doesn’t matter much. They’re both out of options, and based on everything we’ve heard so far out of camp, they both appear likely to make the team. (A couple months ago, I thought Jerry Sands might make it ahead of Tabata, but that now appears unlikely — Sands has an option, and reports from camp on Tabata so far have been uniformly positive, so it seems likely Sands will head to Indianapolis.) Also, Snider is left-handed and Tabata right-handed, so it makes sense to simply start Snider against most righties and Tabata against lefties. That’s ultimately what I think will happen, almost regardless of their spring training performances.Neither Snider nor Tabata played well for the Pirates last season, but my visceral reaction to Tabata’s poor play was much stronger, so I headed into this post expecting to write that Snider clearly should receive most of the playing time, and that anyone overreacting to a week’s worth of spring training games should check themselves. After looking into it more carefully, though, I’m not sure it’s that simple.
