Train less, achieve more: The Benefits of HIIT Training November 12, 2013Blog, Fitness Samantha Whitaker trials Hiitgirl – a 30-minute workout that’s the equivalent of more than two hours’ traditional exerciseHiitgirl, as you may have guessed, is high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for girls. HIIT is really having a moment – and here’s why: alternating bursts of intense, anaerobic exercise with short periods of recovery provides the same benefits as hours of cardio in just a fraction of the time (a study at Canada’s McMaster University confirmed that 2.5 hours of HIIT training provides the same benefits as 10.5 hours of slow cardio). HIIT also raises your resting metabolic rate for up to 24 hours after exercising, and significantly improves your VO2 max (the maximum amount of oxygen that can be taken in during an exercise session) – in other words, your endurance and stamina. What’s more, constantly switching between exercises challenges different muscle groups in turn, so that none suffer too much from wear and tear.Hiitgirl founder Susan Dyson launched her 30-minute sessions in Harrogate, and has just opened her first studio in Crouch End. It’s a beauty: cosy but contemporary with (mostly pink) modern equipment, incense candles burning and words of encouragement on the walls.

Long Duration Cardio (LIIS) VS High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)There has been an emergence of different running events the past few years, and more people are getting hooked joining the fun runs from 5km runs to full marathons. But lately, more and more commercial gyms are advocating the ‘short but sweet’ type of cardio workouts in the form of HIITs. So which is more beneficial? We analyze the pros and cons of each workout and look at the how each fare against each other.Long Duration Cardio, aka LISS (Low Intensity Steady State) is a form of cardio program where an individual runs at a low to moderate intensity over an extended distance or duration (30 minutes or more)

When life gets busy and chaotic, it can be easy to blow off your workout. But, there are ways to get in an effective gym session without slaving away on a treadmill for hours.  We teamed up with Sean Armstead, owner of Phenomenal Fitness, for advice on how to get the most out of your workout.Sean suggests coming to the gym with a game plan. He suggests prioritizing your exercises and getting the “hard stuff” out of the way.“Whatever is the most difficult or requires the most focus and concentration should be done early on before you lose quality of movement or focus due to fatigue,” he says.Sean is also a big fan of tabata training. Tabata is high intensity conditioning where you do 20 seconds of hard work, followed by 10 seconds of rest.

November 9, 2013 | By Dr. Sara Solomon Hotel Room HIITThanks to conveniently quick HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts and portable gym equipment (resistance bands and jump ropes), you never have to miss a workout, even when you travel! I designed this workout to fit into a tiny little hotel room.PLEASE LISTEN: Stop doing steady state cardio on the treadmill or elliptical, and replace it with HIIT! Research shows that fat loss is far greater from HIIT than from steady-state cardio, even when the HIIT workouts were half as long in duration. Why?
